Our Entrepreneurs are a runaway success at Stourbridge Lights Switch On
Our Enterprising Students bring festive cheer and products to Stourbridge
Our Year 11 GCSE Business Enterprise students helped bring the festive spirit and a buzz to the Ryemarket in Stourbridge last Saturday (25 November) with their well-dressed stalls selling festive gifts and decorations for the season. The teams were invited to attend on the same day as the Stourbridge Lights Switch On - helping to ensure crowds flocking to the event had plenty to occupy their time in the town centre.
The 5 teams had been working hard to get their displays and products made prior to the event and set up their stalls in the centre from early morning to ensure they would achieve their sales goals. 4 of the teams are in their final year of their GCSE Business and Enterprise course which requires them to run a mini business as part of their qualification, giving hands-on experience that would never be learnt from text books and case studies. Products ranged from handmade Christmas cards to festive candles, I-pad covers, tree decorations and sweet cones, all unique and hand made by the students.
The group was joined by Louis Gaskin and Molly Goode from one of our Year 10 Young Enterprise teams, selling their festive handmade textile and wooden decorations on their second day of selling (Friday saw them at the Merry Hill Centre Young Enterprise Fair – click here for this story).
Mrs Hunter, subject leader for Design Technology and Business Enterprise said, “The students could have organised a cake sale in school, as most schools do, but I thought it was more important for the students to have a realistic business and sales experience and dealing with the general public. I was proud and pleased with their ability to work in teams, organise their own rotas and displays to sell their goods. The determination of our students and ability to communicate so articulately with the general public has left a positive lasting impression.”
Our school is committed to developing the employability and entrepreneurial skills of our students to ensure they understand the wide range of opportunities available to them as they continue their learning journey in the future.
