Year 10 get a Taste of Catering and Hospitality at Dudley College
Year 10 make some fabulous desserts and meet Catering students at Dudley College
Our school was the first invited to Dudley College’s Term Time Hospitalilty and Catering Taster day on Wednesday 25th January. A group of our Year 10 Catering students accompanied by Mrs Condlyffe and Mrs Turner was introduced to John Mills, the Catering lecturer and his Level 3 students. The impressive teaching kitchens at the College gave the students hands-on experience in a professional catering environment creating a typical dessert from the college’s Level 2 and 3 Catering courses.
John kicked off the session by explaining the rules of the kitchen and correct handwashing methods. Once the aprons were donned, a demonstration in making sweet pastry was given and the group got to work at their own workstations in the kitchen, helped by the College’s students. When the flan bases were made and baked, John demonstrated how to make a Crème President filling to fill the flans. Finally they were topped with a variety of fresh fruit, again demonstrated by John and then followed by the students when creating their own fabulous flans.
Mrs Condlyffe, Food Teacher at PTC said, “This has been a really good taster experience. The students have learnt several new techniques but have also been able to speak to students about the Catering course and use the college’s facilities. We would like to thank John and everyone today for making us feel so welcome and we look forward to working with Dudley again in the near future”.
Our next venture to Dudley College will be to experience a Business Enterprise Taster Day in May.
