Matt Windle delivers "Poetry with a Punch" at Pedmore!
Birmingham Poet Laureate works with our students to prove poetry and verse can be cool!
Birmingham Poet Laureate, Matt Windle - the 'poet with punch’ joined us for a week of exploring modern day poetry. As part of the English Department’s literacy agenda, Matt worked with students to raise confidence in the use of words, encouraging performance and overall improvement of writing ability. Matt works full time across England as a spoken word poet delivering workshops, performances & boxercise classes to schools, libraries, foster homes, young offenders, residential care homes and various other establishments whilst simultaneously fighting as a professional boxer! As a qualified ABA England boxing coach he attempts to mix the unusual blend of boxing and poetry to break stereotypes and inspire others through written and physical expression.
Mrs Tyson, Head of English at Pedmore said, “It was great to see how students responded to the activities. The boys were particularly impressed when Matt revealed he was also a boxer, hence his title of “Poetry with Punch”! Some great raps were produced with many interesting rhymes, one of the most notable being the Black Country dialect response from a talented Year 7 student! We look forward to working with Matt again soon.”
